Over the past couple of weeks I have been listening to The End of Normal by Stephanie Madoff
Mack, the daughter-in-law of notorious Bernie Madoff.
Sweet Stephanie and I took this journey together. We both started off happy listening to her
semi-whiney and emotional voice, and hearing about the good times associated
with dating a New York billionaire. Then
tragedy struck – in her case, her father-in-law admitted to the largest Ponzi
scheme of all time. In my case, I
started to get wary of our narrator as she turned on her in-laws (the innocent ones) and picked
apart specific, boring interactions.
I feel bad for the innocent victims of Madoff’s crimes,
which include Stephanie and her two young children. However, she lost some sympathy from me when
she went on and on about how down-to-earth she was even after marrying a
billionaire. She quit working
permanently three weeks before her wedding to Mark Madoff and they owned three homes. Let’s ease up on the “I’m-just-like-you-everyone!”
claims.
In conclusion, both of us end up whiney in the end –
Stephanie because of her husband’s suicide, and me from having to hear her talk
about it and report back to the masses.
